Emotion Focused Therapy

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) (or Emotion Focused Individual Therapy - EFIT) is an approach to psychotherapy that centres emotions as meaningful, adaptive signals rather than problems to be managed or eliminated.

From an emotion-focused perspective, emotions tell us what matters, where we feel threatened, and where connection is needed. When emotions are ignored, suppressed, or misunderstood - especially over long periods of time - they can become overwhelming, stuck, or expressed in ways that feel confusing or out of proportion.

At The Wren Centre in west Ottawa, many of our therapists work from an emotion-focused lens, integrating its principles into individual, relational, and family therapy. This means we pay close attention to emotional experience, attachment needs, and patterns of interaction, while tailoring the work to each client’s goals and capacity.

What Emotion-Focused Therapy Looks Like

Sessions are collaborative, attuned, and paced. Depending on the therapist and context, emotion-focused work may include:

  • Slowing down emotional experiences to better understand them

  • Identifying underlying needs beneath reactive or protective responses

  • Exploring attachment patterns and relational dynamics

  • Supporting emotional expression in a way that feels safe and contained

  • Strengthening emotional awareness, self-compassion, and communication

Emotion-focused therapy is often integrated alongside other approaches, including talk therapy, somatic therapy, and skills-based support. For some clients, this integration helps emotions feel more manageable; for others, it allows deeper emotional work to unfold without becoming overwhelming.

Our Approach to Emotion Focused Therapy

While not all therapists at The Wren Centre are formally certified in Emotion-Focused Therapy, they have various training or use its principles and orientation as part of an integrative, evidence-based practice. We are transparent about our training and work collaboratively with clients to ensure informed consent and a good therapeutic fit.

If you’re curious about emotion-focused therapy or wondering whether this approach might support your work, we’re happy to help you explore next steps.

Why Emotion Focused Therapy?

While it can be difficult to discuss our emotions - it can even be difficult to name them! - the evidence is clear that when we can identify what is happening within us, our mental health improves. Emotion focused therapy supports awareness of a more nuanced and diverse emotional experience - taking us from just being “good”, “busy”, etc. - to actually recognizing and naming the emotions we experience. Emotion focused therapy (EFT) supports emotional granularity - being able to express our feelings with more nuance - which improves our emotion regulation.
